I would therefore humbly request that you Tould be good enough to recommend to His Excel lay the

Governor that, the scale of salary should be inde oqual to

that of Class III officers £400 to £560 per out with annual in oronants of £20, plus £100 per mum duty pay. The duties of the Zulit Department hora are of a most onerous

description, and are probably of a more varied nature than in

my other colony where officide of the Colonial Audit Do-

~partment are serving. It short I not be overlocked that, \]-

-though the Colony of Hongkong, together with the low Territo-

-rica contain a population of over half a million pœple, yet.

11 tures, rates, licmong ko,, of ovm the most minar

description "ro collected by the Colonial Goverment and not

by a municipality; conse pently the detailed mudit of all

accolte rolating theroto has to be conducted by this

department.

I not wish to apporr to be imperiunte,

but, nor, "cling in accordance with instructions from the

Director of Colonial Audit I wish to bring to your notice that the present scale of salary of Assistent Auditors is not only insufficient to meet the curront expanses of such officiala and their families but is quite inadecurte to most such eventualities as para ges (oither on ordinary or sick leave), or any other expenses of an unusual nature.

I have ntc..

(S.) T. Dallin

Acting Auditor.
